Tired of the Wellbeing Treadmill? You're Not Alone.

We're constantly bombarded with messages about well-being: mindfulness, self-care, healthy habits. It's all good stuff, but sometimes it feels like another thing to plan and execute, adding to the already overflowing to-do list. Instead of feeling zen, you feel like you're on a treadmill of wellbeing strategies, constantly striving but never quite arriving. Sound familiar? You're not alone.

The irony isn't lost on me. Writing about wellbeing can sometimes feel like adding to the noise. But I genuinely believe that true well-being isn't about perfectly ticking boxes on a self-improvement checklist. It's about finding a sense of ease and connection in the midst of our busy lives. So, if you're feeling like you're on that wellbeing treadmill, here are a few thoughts to consider:

Ditch the "Shoulds" and Embrace the "Coulds":

Wellbeing isn't a competition. There's no "right" way to do it. Let go of the pressure to be perfect and instead explore what works for you. Maybe meditation isn't your thing, but you find solace in a walk in nature. Perhaps you don't have time for a full yoga class, but you can stretch for five minutes in the morning. Experiment and find what nourishes you without judgment.

The Power of Presence (and Permission to Pause):

We spend so much time planning for the future, strategising, and "should-ing" ourselves that we forget to enjoy the present moment. Mindfulness isn't about achieving some enlightened state; it's simply about paying attention to what's happening right now. It's about where you're putting your attention. If you find yourself constantly focused on your inner voice – that running commentary of worries, to-dos, and self-criticism – stop. Switch your attention to something outside of yourself. Notice the warmth of your cuppa in your hands. Listen to the birds singing. Really see the vibrant colours of the flowers in your garden. Practise this constantly. The more you do it, the easier it becomes to notice when you're drifting back into that internal chatter and the more skilled you'll become at shifting your focus back to the present. These small moments of presence can add up to a big difference. And give yourself permission to pause. You don't have to be productive every minute of every day.

Let Go of the Illusion of Control:

Life is messy and unpredictable. Things don't always go according to plan, no matter how meticulously we've strategised. Trying to control every aspect of our lives is exhausting and ultimately futile. Instead, practise acceptance. Embrace the unknown. Trust that you have the resilience to handle whatever comes your way.

Simplify, Simplify, Simplify:

We live in a culture that glorifies busyness. We're constantly told that we need to do more, be more, have more. But true well-being often comes from simplifying. Identify your values. What truly matters to you? Focus your energy on those things and let go of the rest. Learn to say no to things that drain you. Delegate when possible. Your time and energy are precious resources.

Be Kind to Yourself (Seriously):

This is perhaps the most important point. We are often our own harshest critics. We beat ourselves up for mistakes and berate ourselves for not being "good enough." However self-compassion is essential for wellbeing. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. Acknowledge your struggles. Celebrate your small victories.

Reconnect with Your Joy:

Somewhere along the way, many of us lose touch with the things that bring us joy. We get so caught up in the responsibilities of life that we forget to play. Make time for fun. Engage in activities that make you feel alive. Reconnect with your passions. Rediscover your sense of wonder.

The well-being journey isn't a race to the finish line. It's a meandering path with twists and turns, ups and downs. Be patient with yourself. Be kind to yourself. And remember, you're not alone on this journey. We're all figuring it out as we go.
