Start with yourself: Self-Leadership coaching

I’ve written blogs on both positive thinking and negative thinking approaches and the effects they have on your interactions in the workplace and beyond. We all naturally tend toward a negative bias to help protect ourselves from potential or perceived threats.

Obviously, in the modern world, there are very few occasions when our lives are truly threatened in the workplace. It’s much more likely that we are faced with conflict or are challenged in our position. With the right coaching, we are capable of shifting our perspective to approach and respond to situations with an open, curious mind and generate our own positive outcomes looking beyond the here and now and moving forward with a positive step.

I thoroughly enjoy coaching people to develop their self-awareness; to make better choices that help change their work-life for the better. Taking ownership of their interactions with others to create a work life they can influence positively.

Is Self-Leadership for me?

Self-leadership coaching is foundational and a precursor to becoming an effective leader.  That is, to be an effective leader you must first begin with yourself. To take control of your  work-life and the direction it is going. It is the self-awareness and self-regulation aspects of the emotional intelligence framework and it focuses on developing self-knowledge (becoming aware of those helpful (positive) and unhelpful (negative) thinking patterns), developing your ability to utilise meta-cognition and active mindfulness so that you can be more open, creative, responsive and less reactive.  You will begin to be more flexible, and agile and gain more confidence.

Through training in the Axiogenics approach, I’ve brought this  Self Leadership course to my clients - coaching towards better and more positive ways of thinking in the workplace and beyond.

Clients come to me with all sorts of questions and for all sorts of reasons. Chances are, if you are reading this blog, you have an inkling that things could be different and where best to start but with yourself.

Do any of these questions resonate with you?

Do you find that you are in a negative cycle of thinking, behaving, and reacting?

Suppose you are already aware of your negative thinking patterns and how they are impacting your working relationships (and opportunities). In that case, you are self-aware of the effect this is having on your work life.  However, you may be at a loss as to what to do to change this.

Do you notice that you can’t move forward? The job you have is no longer satisfying you, but there seems to be a block to making it better.

You might be ready to look inward and consider your interactions and how you are negatively impacting your own development.

Do you want something different from what you are doing now?

You thought your job was what you wanted, but it’s not fulfilling you in the way you expected. It may be that there is a misalignment in what value is expected from you vs what value you bring to the job.  It could be that you are putting too much pressure on yourself to “meet expectations” and keep telling yourself that you are not measuring up; when the reality is that you are doing an outstanding job from other people’s perspectives.

Managing yourself, your reactions, and your thinking patterns could be the first step to making a change. After all, we can’t control or manage others, but we can manage our reactions to others.

The ability to notice and recognise our own thinking can increase our emotional intelligence which, in turn, gives us more flexibility in the way we respond to given situations. Over time and with practice this leads to more self-confidence and less stress. We are able to move beyond reacting from an internal place of fear, to one of a considered and open-minded reaction to other people’s perspectives and external influences.

What is the Self-Leadership programme?

The Self-Leadership programme is a three-phase personal development process that focuses on developing:

  1. Clarity around your goals - what you want more of and less of in your work and life.

  2. Developing active mindfulness about the thinking patterns that are unhelpful and sabotaging your efforts.

  3. Creating new capabilities through learning how to pause, pivot, and access your best thinking habits.

I work with  you to help you develop your self knowledge and identify those thinking habits that lead to self-sabotaging behaviours that undermine you. And coach you to pivot to your best  ways of thinking so that you make better choices so that you become more influential and effective.
